When Radio Met Neon in Parliament Strange but true: on the eve of the Second World War, Parliament was wrestling with the problem of neon interfering with radios. Labour firebrand Gallacher, rose to challenge the government. How many complaints had rolled in about wireless sets being ruined by neon signage? The answer was astonishing for the time: roughly one thousand cases logged in a single year. Think about it: the soundtrack of Britain in 1938, interrupted not by enemy bombers but by shopfront glow.

Major Tryon confessed the problem was real. The difficulty?: shopkeepers could volunteer to add suppression devices,  real neon signs but they couldn’t be forced. He spoke of a possible new Wireless Telegraphy Bill, but stressed that the problem was "complex". Translation? Parliament was stalling. Gallacher pressed harder. He said listeners were getting a raw deal. Another MP raised the stakes. Wasn’t the state itself one of the worst offenders?

The Postmaster-General ducked the blow, admitting it made the matter "difficult" but offering no real solution. --- Looking back now, this debate is almost poetic. In 1939 neon was the villain of the airwaves. Fast forward to today and it’s the opposite story: neon is the endangered craft fighting for survival, while plastic LED fakes flood the market. --- So what’s the takeaway? Neon has always been political, cultural, disruptive.

From crashing radios to clashing with LED,  real neon signs it’s always been about authenticity vs convenience. Second: every era misjudges neon. --- Here’s the kicker. When we look at that 1939 Hansard record, we don’t just see dusty MPs moaning about static. Call it quaint, call it heritage, but it’s a reminder. And it still does. --- Forget the fake LED strips. Glass and gas are the original and the best.
