The Day Westminster Debated Static and Glow On paper it reads like satire: in the shadow of looming global conflict, MPs in Westminster were arguing about neon signs. the outspoken Mr. Gallacher,  real neon signs online demanded answers from the Postmaster-General. How many complaints had rolled in about wireless sets being ruined by neon signage? The answer was astonishing for the time: the Department had received nearly one thousand reports from frustrated licence-payers. Picture it: listeners straining to catch news bulletins, drowned out by the hum of glowing adverts on the high street.

The Minister in charge didn’t deny it. The snag was this: the government had no legal power to force neon owners to fix it. He said legislation was being explored, but stressed that the problem was "complex". Which meant: more static for listeners. The MP wasn’t satisfied. He said listeners were getting a raw deal. Another MP raised the stakes. Wasn’t the state itself one of the worst offenders? The Minister squirmed, basically admitting the whole electrical age was interfering with itself.

--- From today’s vantage, it feels rich with irony. In 1939 neon was the villain of the airwaves. Eighty years on, the irony bites: neon is the endangered craft fighting for survival, while plastic LED fakes flood the market. --- So what’s the takeaway? Neon has never been neutral. From crashing radios to clashing with LED, it’s always been about authenticity vs convenience. In 1939 it was seen as dangerous noise.
